Almost every square inch of the
surface of the country has been
changed or created by the actions of
people, from prehistoric times to the
present. It is also clear that people
will have a hand in the future of the
British countryside through their
activities – both those designed to
have an effect on the makeup of
the landscape and those that are
not immediately connected to the
countryside. There are many forces
for change acting on our countryside
and this is always going to be the
case.
- The AONB is not an island remote
from the rest of the country and only
visited rarely by outsiders. The area is
intimately connected to the rest of
Cumbria and Lancashire and through them to the UK and Europe and then
globally.
What happens in the wider
world will affect what happens in
the AONB. However there is an
imperative to “conserve and
enhance” the AONB and those who
are charged with looking after the
Area have some tools available to
ensure changes are mostly positive. The Area has a dedicated AONB
Service, a team of staff and volunteers
working to secure the best possible
conservation outcomes for the Area,
now and into the future.
However the AONB Service, the
local authorities, partners and even
the Government (in the form of
Natural England) cannot secure the
enhancement part of the purpose
alone! It requires that everyone undertakes some actions that will
help ensure a sustainable future for
the AONB, its landscape, its wildlife,
its heritage and culture.
Which brings me to the point of publishing “The Landscape
Cookbook”.
Not only is it an unconventional cookbook that tempts your taste buds
with the
food grown and produced in the area, it is also a guide book that opens
your
eyes to the wonders around you as it takes you into the mysteries and
special
places of the AONB.
The book highlights the benefits of thinking
about where your food comes from,
the values that underpin its production and the role that farming plays
in
our lives – and even the role you can play in farming come to that!
